Jul 23, 2019 NEW YORK (AP) — Shaun White is pressing forward with plans to shoot for the Summer Olympics in skateboarding. White said Tuesday on NBC’s “Today” show that he will compete at world championships in September “and see what happens” before deciding whether to try to earn a spot on the U.S. Team for skateboarding’s Olympic debut next summer in Tokyo. First, the game is not well localized to the Macintosh. The keyboard controls are hard to use and mostly unintuitive, the menus are slow to navigate using the mouse, and you can't even play the game easily unless you have a full keyboard with numpad.

Well, it certainly plays differently. The main difference is that you can only go downhill if you want to move at any significant speed. If you want to climb back up in under half an hour, you have to snowboard to a chair lift or helicopter and get dropped off at a spot higher up on the course. You also can connect to friends and have them join you on the mountains, which is something that Tony Hawk doesn't really offer.
SWS definitely falls behind in character customization, though. You could determine your skater's stats, change your skater's shape, and even level up and improve those base stats in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4. In SWS, all you can improve is your board and your outfits. There also doesn't seem to be any way to switch between players. If there is one, it's hidden well enough for it to be almost impossible to find.
There are lots of similarities between the two as well. Both SWS and Tony Hawk allow for jump moves, flips, and grinds using a separate set of buttons for movement and turning on the moves, they both have missions that you can beat for cash, they both have multiple areas to explore (although Tony Hawk has more), and they both have a shop where you can purchase new gear to customize your skater/snowboarder.
However, Shaun White Snowboarding has a few glaring problems with it. First, the game is not well localized to the Macintosh. The keyboard controls are hard to use and mostly unintuitive, the menus are slow to navigate using the mouse, and you can't even play the game easily unless you have a full keyboard with numpad. You can't customize the controls, just switch control sets. As such, if you don't have a numpad, four key buttons will always be outside your reach. Seeing as most laptops tend to be without one, you're forced to either connect a gamepad or an external keyboard to play. It's pretty obvious that the game was ported with the Xbox 360 controller in mind.
The second problem is actually due to the realism of the game, ironically. You can't go back and redo a certain area of the hill without either walking, which takes a while, or snowboarding down to the lift, which also takes a little while. This is more of an annoyance than anything, but it gets in the way of properly enjoying yourself in a few areas. For example, about midway between the top of a lift and the bottom, there was a stretch of grinding edges laid out in a way that allowed you to jump from one to the other. I wanted to get a really good multiplier by doing tricks along it, but I kept messing up and having to slowly trudge back up to the start and try again. It would've been nice to have a snowmobile or something following along to speed things up.
Lastly, whenever you get a special wipeout you start where you were when you started boarding before the wipeout. This is particularly annoying when you climb up as high as you could above the board lifts and start boarding down, only to get hit by an avalanche. The avalanche occurs every time you go down unless you walk, which forces you to walk all the way down or get stuck in an endless loop of avalanches.

Shaun White is a dual sport professional athlete who maintains some of the highest accolades within snowboarding and skateboarding. Despite being born with a congenital heart defect, Shaun started snowboarding at age six and immediately showed an uncanny talent for the sport. By seven — the same age he was discovered by Tony Hawk at a San Diego skate park — Shaun had won a series of competitions and landed a sponsorship with Burton.
Shaun has amassed numerous titles and victories, most notably 3 Winter Olympic gold medals in 2006, 2010 and 2018 where he earned the 100th gold medal. He is the only athlete with two perfect 100 scores. He holds the X Games records for gold medals with 15 and the highest overall medal count with 23 to date. He also has won 11 ESPY awards for Best Male Action Sports Athlete and Best Male US Olympic Athlete.
Shaun got sponsored by Burton at 7 and turned pro at 13. He won his first US Open at 16, becoming the youngest rider ever to do so, and won his first Olympics gold medal at 19. He racked up a record-breaking number of contest wins in US Open, Air + Style, X Games, Dew Tour, and ESPY Awards, becoming the most decorated snowboarder in history—all before legal drinking age.
In the decade since, he’s continued to win or medal in practically everything he’s entered across halfpipe, slopestyle, big air, and quarterpipe; built best-selling signature lines for Burton, Oakley, and Target; been the face of a snowboard video game; invented impossibly difficult tricks; scored the only perfect 100 in X Games SuperPipe history.

While Shaun was being lauded mostly as a snowboard prodigy, he was turning just as many heads in the skate scene. Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk befriended a 7-year-old Shaun at the famous Encinitas YMCA vert ramp and mentored the up-and-comer, eventually turning him pro for his company, Birdhouse Skateboards, at the age of 17 in 2003.
With multiple clothing lines, signature products, companies, content partnerships, and video games under his belt, Shaun is constantly expanding his personal brand with various new investments under the Shaun White Enterprises umbrella.

Shaun White became the majority shareholder of the iconic, global Air + Style festival in 2014 with the mission of growing the sport of snowboarding and the culture that surrounds it through physical events and digital content. With multiple stops across the globe, Air + Style is an annual snowboard and music festival that has seen some of the most groundbreaking riding in history, as well as musical performances from Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Flume, Steve Aoki, Kaskade, Haim, and many more.

After a decade of designing youth clothing for Target, Shaun launched his mens’ line, WHT Space, through Macy’s.
Shaun wanted to create something more representative of who he had grown up to be, something different. So he did just that.

As a massive reinvestment into the sport that made him famous, Shaun White secured a deal in 2016 to own a percentage of legendary Southern California ski resort Mammoth Mountain—including the resorts he grew up riding, Bear Mountain and Snow Summit.
